I am not sure ‘for’ our transgressions, as NKJV, NASB, ESV, NIV, ASV etc, is entirely accurate, since, to me at least, it seems to signify exchange – in place of – more than cause, which I think is the idea here. The OED does have ‘of the cause or reason’ as meaning type VII of ‘for’ – eg ‘worse for wear’ – but it’s pretty obscure I think.

So I prefer your ‘because’, as also HCSB, Lexham etc.
